The Current

Using the nearby Schuylkill River as  metaphor, this mural worked with underserved youth in Olivet's Mentoring in the Arts Program (MAP), asking them to think about a current, and when it may be best not to go with the flow.

About the Project

The MAP Program partners local artists with youth, and they meet weekly to plan and fabricate a portion of the project.  The Current included both a 250 foot long painting as well as a 50 foot mosaic of the same design.  Remcon Plastics, the site of the project, manufactures kayaks in addition to other plastic forms. During the sessions leading up to the installation, the students worked with Leviner to create some of the clay tiles used in the mosaics.  The installation took place over one weekend with the MAP students and staff working with about 50 community volunteers.
